British newspapers are printed on low quality paper with high lignin and acid content which cause the paper to become yellow and brittle. This process cannot be stopped but steps can be taken to extend the life of the paper.
Care should be taken when handling newspapers. Our white cotton gloves
(product code 837-600M) should be worn to prevent chemical reactions of the body oils in fingerprints being in contact with the newspaper.
Prior to storing it is important to ensure the newspapers are clean and dry. If damaged you may require specialist advice from a paper conservator. Paper conservators may be found by searching on line at
www.conservationregister.comNewspapers should not be kept in basements, garages or attics where conditions are unstable, damp and cold, or in direct sunlight as UV rays will cause fading yellowing and brittleness.
Arcare Ltd offer a range of acid free Polyester L-velopes
(product code 565-1522) in which to place newspapers and these may then be stored in our acid free Newspaper Storage Boxes
(product code 732-1522). L-velopes are sealed on two adjacent sides to allow the newspaper to be easily inserted. Conservators insist on polyester for glass clear inert protection that will not crack or yellow with age.
